The flag of Massachusetts consists of a white base with the state seal in the center. Above the shield is a bent arm holding a broadsword, which is acting out part of the state motto, which is written on a blue ribbon at the bottom of the shield. Ense Petit Placidam Sub Libertate Quietem, which means ‘By the Sword We Seek Peace, But Peace Only Under Liberty’.
The seal features a Native Algonquin American holding a bow in one hand and an arrow in the other hand. The arrow is pointing downwards, to signify his peaceful intent. On the top right corner of the shield is a white five-pointed star which represents Massachusetts as one of the original 13 colonies of the United States.
