The flag of Tennessee consists of a crimson red base with a blue circle, outlined in white, in the center. There are three white, five-pointed stars in the circle. On the right side of the flag there is a thin blue vertical stripe with a thinner white vertical stripe on the inside of it.

| | The three stars stand for the three distinct geographical areas of Tennessee, the lowlands of the west, the highlands of the middle and the mountains of the east. They also represent Tennessee as the third state, after the original 13, to join the Union. The stars and blue circle represent an indivisible unity.
