PVC vs. Steel Foundation Tubes

PVC foundation tubes cover the residential sizes — 3 in. x 24 in., 3 in. x 30 in., 4 in. x 30 in. and 4 in. x 36 in. Steel foundation tubes start at 8 in. x 30 in. and run through 8 in. x 36 in., 10 in. x 36 in., 10 in. x 42 in., 10 in. x 48 in., 12 in. x 48 in. and 12 in. x 60 in., topping out with the 15 in. series in 60 in., 72 in., 84 in. and 96 in. lengths for the tallest commercial poles, where the tube has to transfer far more load into the footing.

Sizing the Tube to the Pole

Match the tube inside diameter to the butt diameter of the pole, and the tube length to the depth your pole height and local soil call for. Taller poles need both a wider and a deeper tube — that is why the 15 in. tubes are offered as long as 96 in. Ordering the tube at the same time as the pole avoids the common problem of a footing that is already poured when the pole arrives.

Finishing the Installation

Once the pole is set and plumbed, a base collar covers the joint between the pole and the top of the tube.
