Nylon vs. MFP Polypropylene Halyard

Braided nylon is the traditional halyard — strong, smooth through a pulley, and easy to splice. MFP polypropylene is a multifilament rope that does not absorb water, so it stays lighter in the rain and is a common choice on coastal and marine installations. Both are offered in 1/4 in., 5/16 in. and 3/8 in.

Choosing a Diameter

Match the halyard to the truck and cleat on your pole. Undersized rope slips in a cam cleat and wears fast over a pulley; oversized rope binds in the sheave. Residential poles typically run 1/4 in. or 5/16 in., while larger commercial poles use 3/8 in.

Cut Length or Spool

Buy by the foot when you are replacing the halyard on a single pole — a rough rule is twice the pole height plus working slack. Buy a spool if you maintain several poles or want replacement rope on hand.
